Mission

SABER Magazine is a multimedia platform that functions as a production company and community activator, as well as a resource to support local artists & Kansas City as a whole. We plan to help local artists by crafting thought-provoking campaigns, organizing community events, and telling the stories that make KC and its artists so unique. With this app, we plan to create a central platform for discovery and ideation.

Our Story

SABER Magazine was started back in the summer of 2017. While attending what most assumed to be a regular house party, founder Andrés Nelso got the itch to tell as many people about his experience as possible. See this wasn’t some normal house party, it was a creative explosion right in the heart of Kansas City. Now, a lot of the music that was being played at this party wasn’t on the radio or streaming services, but somehow everyone in the party knew the words. Andrés left that party with a new love for his city and the creatives in it.

At the time, Andrés was attending the Minneapolis College of Art & Design (MCAD) studying Graphic Design. MCAD had a lot of helpful resources such as an inhouse print studio that became our home. When you mix the love of art and discovery with the passion of storytelling, you achieve the perfect storm. Since 2017, SABER has gone on to release eight print volumes, featuring submissions from all over the country. SABER has been nothing without its community, which leads us to this point today.

Fundraising Transparency

Campaign donations will help transition SABER to a creative platform for the future. We are committed to full transparency in the use of your donations. Here is how we plan to allocate the funds raised:

  • Development and Maintenance: The bulk of the funds will go towards the full development and maintenance of the SABER Mobile application. This platform will expand on the SABER tradition of showcasing the creative culture of Kansas City. This includes music, art, poetry, stories, and other forms of expressive art. The main features will include a live music player where users are encouraged to submit their music, a personalized profile for users to showcase their portfolios, and a customized home feed allowing users to follow and support their community directly.
  • Operational costs: 10% of your contributions will be allocated to cover operational expenses. These include compensating our talented team, marketing to ensure our reach is broad and impactful, hosting fees to keep our website and application presence reliable, and purchasing equipment needed for future campaigns and productions.
  • SABER VOL. NINE: Any additional funds, after covering development, maintenance, and operational costs, will be allocated to the production of the final print issue of our magazine. This issue will serve as a culmination of everything SABER has been known for up to this point and act as a launching pad for the SABER Mobile Application.

We commit to managing all contributions with the utmost integrity and keeping all parties informed about how your support is making a difference here at SABER. Together, we can make this transition an integral step forward for SABER Magazine and our community. Thank you for your support!

DEI&A (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, & Accessibility) Statement

We are an 80% minority owned organization, so we aim to make diversity a focus in how we tell our stories and showcase Kansas City. SABER Magazine aims to help sustain the development of the Kansas City creative community. We understand that without our hometown, our work would be nothing, so we plan on giving back as much as we can. Continuing to build connections in the city will push ALL of us forward, both in our craft and careers. We plan on developing community outreach programs such as community clean-up days, workshops, and internships for students who are interested in creative work.

We also plan on crafting high school mentorship programs to further progress the art community and its development for generations to come. Cultivating the youth by giving them a creative outlet is pivotal for the growth of young adults and it’s a mission the SABER team holds dear to their heart.

With a hard-working, ambitious team that has a combined history of 20+ years involved in the local and national arts scene, we believe we have assembled the best to achieve these goals. Here’s to our future together. Thank you again for your support!
