Hello, my name is Sue and I live in Scotland. I have known Adam Sabbahs sister in law for about 5 years, having helped her with her English via Skype. I created a very successful fund for her and her children which has reached its goal, and I am now creating a fund for another part of the family who have not been so fortunate.
Adam Sabbah (35) is a nurse and has been working flat out to help save people in hospital. In his own words:
It is difficult to face the challenges of war away from your wife and children. You leave your wife and little girls in terror and fear from the sound of bombing planes and cannons, asking where are you going? Here I am silent for a while because it is difficult to leave the injured and sick, you are a human being working as a nurse to help the many wounded and relieve their pain, you hear them screaming “please help me!”. I always try to contact my wife and children as much as possible. I feel happy when I hear my children's voices saying “When will you be back?” i tell them “ soon my children, soon”. My wife tells me that she has made some sweets for them and hopes they will like them. My wife smiles and asks me in a quiet voice my children cannot hear,” when will you be back, I am scared”.
His wife is Sahar and they have 4 daughters, beautiful little girls who, as Adam point out, haven’t seen much of their father since the terrible situation.
This is from left to right, Raghad (3), Toulin(8), Nidaa(5) and Rital(9). The girls used to enjoy school and nursery but all that has been taken away, but, being very brave little girls they have tried to continue to study inside their tents. In Adam’s words:
They lost their warm home, nice food, clothes and toys. They lost lost a bag full of photos of them. They lost the school bus and their teacher. Rital tries to study in an educational tent where children are older than her, she borrows her sisters torn shoes to go. She complains about not understanding simple letters. Tulin is sad remembering her first day at school. Nidaa misses her beautiful playroom and cries when she sees her photo on the swing.
Raghad has recently had to have a bilateral inguinal hernia operation. Her condition was caused by a weakness in the abdominal wall and is present at birth. It can be dangerous since the hernia can swell and trap the intestines. Raghad was extremely brave and has recovered well from her operation.
Also included are Adam’s mother Nidaa(55) and father Hatem (60). Nidaa was an artisan dressmaker, apparently known for her beautiful garments. She worked from home but that has all been destroyed. She brought in an important part of the family income.
Hatem had a grocery shop in Gaza City but his livelihood has been destroyed and now he has nothing.
Adam has 2 young brothers, Mahmoud(18) and Siraj(11, front cover photo). Mahmoud was studying to go to university, now he walks long distances to follow some of his classes. School books are hard to obtain as many were used to light fires for cooking due to fuel shortages. He speaks in a confused voice, his classrooms and teachers are gone and he has friends who are injured or missing.
Siraj avoids studying because he is anxious about what has happened. He has gone a year without seeing a class, teacher or friend. He has been in contact with one friend who was separated from him in the displacement and who tells him “I saw the huge tanks with the terrifying sound” and Siraj replies “Death almost snatched me when a house next to him was bombed”. Childhoods have been stolen.
And last but not least is another brother, Mohammed Sabbah(27). Mohammed is a qualified civil engineer, having studied at The university of Gaza. His office was in Gaza city and has been destroyed, along with all his engineering work and studies on a computer. Mohammed has been driving a water delivery truck for the camps and thanks to him I managed to get all donations from my previous fund to his sister in laws family via his bank.(This family did not benefit from it)
This was the beautiful family home in Gaza City which Adam and Mohammed went to check on due to the ceasefire, and found in ruins. They fled on October 10th to the poor shelter of a tent, inadequate food and no clean water, sanitation or electricity.
Mohammed sees his home in ruins
Now their new home
Please help this beautiful, hard working and clever family to obtain the better life that they deserve. Even with a ceasefire they have lost everything and have a very uncertain future. I will keep you updated on a regular basis and informed of money transfers to the family. Thank you so much for reading this. Adam and his family will be very grateful for your donations and fund shares. Best wishes, Sue
