Support for Ryan Shuler’s Long Road to Recovery After Mountain Biking Accident

On Friday, July 18, 2025, our big brother Ryan Shuler—an Army veteran, dedicated medic on Mt. Hood, and medical providor at multiple Portland locations—was involved in a devastating mountain biking accident that has left him with serious injuries and a long recovery ahead.

While trail riding in the mountains he loves, Ryan hit something in the path that caused his bike to break. He was thrown forward and suffered major trauma to his face and head. He sustained multiple facial fractures, a broken jaw in several places (which is now wired shut), a broken nose, deep facial lacerations, and lost several teeth. Ryan had to undergo emergency surgery involving multiple plates in his face and a tracheotomy to allow him breathe. He has been in the ICU since the accident and is expected to be moved to a regular room this week.

This is just the beginning of his recovery.

Ryan’s path to healing will take months. While he's known for being strong, resilient, and the first to help others in need, right now he needs our help. He will be out of work for an extended period, and the medical bills are already mounting. As a student working toward an advanced degree in medical research, Ryan was balancing multiple jobs and study commitments even before this accident. Now, the financial strain threatens his stability and future plans.
