Across the world in Rwanda, many children face barriers to healthcare that are difficult for us to imagine. Routine well-checks and physicals are non-existent. When a child becomes ill enough to require hospitalization, families must provide their own essential supplies—items as basic as diapers. Many parents lack transportation to the hospital or a place to stay while their child receives care. Too often, this means families are forced to take their children home without the treatment they desperately need.

In May 2026, YSU Social Work and Nursing faculty and students will travel to Rwanda to support local communities by providing social and emotional literacy programs and nursing care. As part of this mission, we are creating a fund to help parents of hospitalized children access the resources necessary for their child’s care.
