Help Ruth Cohen Make Cancer A Story Of The Past

The news no one ever wants to hear became our reality on June 25th — our mom, Ruth Cohen, was diagnosed with breast cancer.

 

Our mother has always been an advocate for annual testing, but due to the unforeseen circumstances brought on by the current pandemic, hospitals have been forced to delay such routine procedures. Resultingly, preliminary diagnostics pointed to a localized form of breast cancer; upon further testing, it was confirmed that tumors had developed in both breasts.

 

After undergoing the utmost aggressive form of chemotherapy and radiation, our brave mom, unfortunately, had to have both breasts removed — a procedure known as a double/bilateral mastectomy.

 

Following the 6 hour surgery, the surgeon informed our family that the cancer affected most lymph nodes which now required immediate removal.

 

Of all the challenges we were forced to endure thus far, we were now presented with a new obstacle. How could we see the woman we view as Superwoman now be confined to reduced mobility in one arm?

 

Lymphedema — a result of removing all lymph nodes — is triggered by the most mundane of tasks, such as lifting a grocery bag. Consequently, our Superwoman will no longer be able to get infusions in that area or perform simple activities to avoid any inflammation and swelling.

 

Those who know our mother know that she would go above and beyond for the ones she loves. Our home and hearts have always been open to everyone, and now we are asking you to open yours in our time of need. When a family member faces a battle like this, it cripples the entire family. We have done all we can and have all had to reduce our working hours to support our mother and our family during this fragile time, but unfortunately, bills continue to stack up. Our mother will be unable to perform any regular activities or work for some time, and our father and grandmother are constantly attending to her needs. Therefore, we kindly ask you to help our mom and our family during this difficult time. Please consider donating where you can and sharing this post so others might be able to do the same.

La nouvelle que toute personne appréhende est devenue notre réalité le 25 juin. Notre mère, Ruth Cohen, a été diagnostiquée d’un cancer du sein.

 

Elle a toujours été ponctuelle avec ses bilans annuels, mais due à la pandémie, la majorité des procédures « non-urgentes » ont été retardées. Les diagnostics préliminaires indiquaient une forme localisée de cancer au sein gauche et au sein droit.

 

Après avoir subi la forme la plus agressive de chimiothérapie notre mère a dû, malheureusement, subir une mastectomie bilatérale.

 

Après 6 heures de chirurgie, le chirurgien nous a informé que le cancer avait affecté 2 ganglions, par mesure de précaution il a dû enlever la majorité des ganglions lymphatiques.

 

Nous devons maintenant faire face à un nouvel obstacle. Comment est-ce possible de voir notre superwoman être désormais confinée à une mobilité réduite dans un bras ? Le lymphœdème, résultat de l'ablation des ganglions lymphatiques, est déclenché par la simple tâche de soulever un sac d'épicerie. En conséquence, elle ne pourra plus recevoir de perfusions dans ce bras afin d’éviter toute inflammation.

 

Ceux qui connaissent notre mère savent qu'elle donnerait tout pour ceux qu'elle aime. Notre maison a toujours été ouverte à tout le monde, et maintenant nous vous demandons d’ouvrir vos cœurs et aider notre mère à traverser ces moments difficiles. Cette bataille ne mobilise pas simplement la personne atteinte, mais toute une famille. Malheureusement, nous étions tous obligés de réduire nos heures de travail. Le problème c’est que les factures continuaient à rentrer.

 

Notre mère ne sera plus capable d’entreprendre de simples activités ou de travailler (espérons temporairement). Notre père et notre grand-mère sont toujours à ses côtés, choses qui ne permet plus d’avoir les mêmes entrées salariales.
