Introductie:

Buiten komen evenmin. Zelfs beneden in huis was jarenlang onbereikbaar geworden.

Ik leefde niet meer. Ik overleefde.

Neurophysics Therapy in 2024:

Rutger & Ilse

Title: Help Rutger Fully Recover from ME

Fundraising goal: 20K

Introduction:

Dear family, friends, acquaintances, and everyone who cares about us,

I’m Rutger (40). A year after I married the love of my life, Ilse, in 2013, I became ill. At first, we thought it was “just” burnout, but my body did not recover. In fact, every time I exerted myself, I became sicker.

After a long medical search, a German doctor finally diagnosed me in 2018 with ME [1], as a result of an Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection. This diagnosis was confirmed again in 2020 and 2021 by the CVS/ME Medisch Centrum and the Vermoeidheidskliniek, respectively.

Despite countless treatments, medications, supplements and therapies, my health continued to deteriorate. Eventually, I was completely bedbound for more than three years. I was dependent on help 24 hours a day. I could no longer climb the stairs. Going outside was impossible too. Even going downstairs in my own home had been beyond my reach for years.

I was no longer living. I was surviving.

NeuroPhysics Therapy in 2024:
In 2024, we were given the opportunity to travel to Australia for three months to undergo NeuroPhysics Therapy. For my severe form of ME, this was the only treatment that still offered a real prospect of improvement.

However, it seemed almost impossible.

I could barely leave my bed, let alone travel to the other side of the world. Thanks to a successful crowdfunding campaign and the support of so many wonderful people, it became possible after all. My wife Ilse and my mother spent months arranging everything needed to make the journey medically safe. Eventually, accompanied by Ilse and my father-in-law, I travelled all the way to Australia lying completely flat.

The treatment worked. For the first time in years, something happened that we had almost stopped daring to hope for… I started to improve!

After years of only getting worse, I began taking steps forward again. Recovery is hard work and requires a great deal of discipline and perseverance. The recovery process comes in waves: periods in which I am able to do more and try new things alternate with periods in which I have to take a step back and rest more. As part of my regular routine, I rest or sleep for approximately 1.5 hours almost every afternoon after training, to process the information and recover.

In practice, the speed of recovery appears to depend on three important factors: how severely ill you were, how long you had been ill when you started the therapy, and your age. The more severely and the longer you were ill, and the older you are, the longer it takes to make a full recovery. As I was among the patients with the most severe form of ME and had already been ill for ten years, my recovery is taking longer.

I can now come downstairs again, eat at the table, walk an average of 4,000 steps a day, do a little work in the garden, shower occasionally, go on short outings, and receive visitors. There is still a long way to go, but for the first time in years there is genuine hope again! I can laugh again and once more have hope and a future to look forward to. On average, I do NPT training five times a week. Each training session lasts approximately 1.5 hours.

What I am not yet able to do is look at screens for extended periods, cook, do household chores, or sit in a car for more than an hour. I am also not able to go to church yet. Apart from walking, cycling and cardio exercise in general are still beyond what I can manage. I hope to start doing these in programmes 3 and 4 of NPT. I am still in programmes 1 and 2 and closely follow the advice and instructions of my neurotrician, Nickie Bainbridge Ware. This prevents me from pushing beyond my limits and doing anything counterproductive.

After returning to the Netherlands, my recovery has fortunately continued, although it has been slower than during the treatment in Australia. The upward trend is still there, but we can see that I could make much more progress if I were able to receive treatment in Australia again for a longer period.

Returning to Australia:

That is why we want to return to Australia in early 2027, this time for a longer period of around nine to ten months.

This longer period will give my body the time it needs to recover at its own pace, without pressure, and with enough time between treatments to properly process everything. Our goal is not only to make further progress, but above all to achieve a full and lasting recovery. We still have so many dreams. We would love to become parents, and once I have recovered enough, I would like to train as a Neurotrician, so that I can give something back and help others who are going through the same thing. I hope to be able to begin the training during the final part of those nine months.

Why a crowdfunding campaign?

After returning home, we immediately started saving. By now, we have managed to cover the largest part of the costs ourselves, but a nine- to ten-month stay in Australia, including the therapy, is still a huge financial challenge. Unfortunately, the treatment is not covered by our health insurance.

To be honest, we find it quite difficult to start another crowdfunding campaign.
That is why, above all, we want to say: please do not feel under any obligation. If you are unable or prefer not to contribute, we completely understand. Sharing our crowdfunding campaign also helps enormously. Every contribution, large or small, brings us another step closer to our goal: a genuine chance of a full and lasting recovery.

Thank you so much, with all our love,

Rutger & Ilse,
