Two weeks ago, Heather assumed Rutger had the stomach flu. After she noticed he could not stop vomiting, she took him to the ER. While at the ER they decided to perform a CT scan on his brain due to his symptoms. The CT scan showed a brain tumor in his basil ganglia. Once he was transferred to Children's Hospital, they biopsied the tumor and confirmed that he has a very aggressive form of brain cancer, glioblastoma. Unfortunately, where the tumor is they are unable to operate. He is scheduled to start an aggressive routine of radiation and chemotherapy on September 13th. He will have 6 weeks of radiation M-F and chemo therapy M-F once every 3 weeks for a year. His most recent CT scan showed that the tumor is doubling in size every 11 days.
Heather is a teacher's aid for the Regional Day School for the Deaf. She is going to need help financially as she will have to take a significant time off of work to be with her son as he undergoes radiation and chemo therapy. Heather has 10 sick paid sick days for the year, which she will quickly exhaust due to his plan of care. This money will help offset loss of income during his treatment. This money will also help go towards medical bills for his hospital stays and treatments.
This tragic situation has caught Heather and her family by surprise. Please help Heather and her sweet Rutger while he fights this brain cancer!
