Support Rusty Burns & Family After Life-Threatening Strokes

A loving father’s life changed in an instant. Your support will help provide stability and comfort to Rusty and his family as they navigate his recovery.

What Happened:

On Wednesday, 09/03, Russell “Rusty” Burns came home from work with what seemed like a migraine and neck pain. Within minutes, the pain became extreme, and he collapsed as the right side of his body went numb. Natasha suspected a stroke and called 911. At the ER, a CT Angiogram revealed a tear in Rusty’s vertebral artery, which caused clotting and multiple strokes.

A Medical Crisis Unfolds:

Over the next 72 hours, Rusty’s family watched helplessly as his condition escalated. He suffered a second, more severe stroke in the hospital waiting room, causing double vision and difficulty with moving and speaking. Because the MRI at French Hospital couldn’t accommodate his shoulders, Rusty was transferred to Marian Hospital in Santa Maria. There, scans confirmed several brain lesions from strokes caused by the artery tear. Doctors warned that clots in that position could cause paralysis or worse.

Rusty was life-flighted to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, where he spent four days in the Surgical ICU (SICU). At one point, his heart stopped for 20 seconds, and his family thought they had lost him. He miraculously came back on his own. Doctors later performed a brain surgery (thrombectomy), which confirmed the clot had resolved naturally, though the artery tear must heal over time.

After surgery, follow-up imaging showed Rusty suffered another stroke between scans, leading to ongoing vision issues, numbness, and weakness on his right side. After a week in the hospital, Rusty spent another week in an acute inpatient rehabilitation center. Over the next several months Rusty will need a variety of ongoing therapies.

The Man Behind the Crisis:

Rusty is not just a patient — he’s a devoted husband to Natasha, loving father to 2.5-year-old Galini and 9-month-old Loxley, and a cherished son, brother, uncle, and friend. Even in the hospital, hooked up to dozens of monitors, he greeted everyone with warmth and positivity. His resilience inspires his family and medical team. While Rusty fought through the hardest week of his life, Natasha has been balancing the needs of both children while caring for him. Galini missed her nighttime snuggles with her dada and his home-cooked pasta sauce. Loxley often clutched the hospital badge chanting “dada, dada, dada”. Rusty’s absence was felt deeply, and his family is so grateful to have him home recovering.

The Financial Reality:

The costs are staggering:
• Life flight helicopter: $36,000–$40,000
• Multiple ambulance transfers: $2,000–$4,000
• Two-week hospital stay with ICU: $25,000–$35,000
• Inpatient rehabilitation (1–4 weeks): $10,000–$25,000
• Lost income and ongoing care: $5,000–$10,000

Even with insurance, families typically face $10,000+ in out-of-pocket expenses from deductibles, co-pays, and uncovered services.

Our Goal: $50,000

This goal will help cover:
• Life flight and ambulance costs
• Hospital and intensive care bills
• Rehabilitation and ongoing therapy
• Medications and medical equipment
• Lost income during recovery
• Family support and transportation costs

While total treatment over the next 6 months to a year (or more) may exceed $100,000, $50,000 will address the most urgent needs and keep Rusty’s family afloat during his recovery.

A Message of Hope:
Doctors say Rusty’s progress has been remarkable given the severity of his strokes. The next 3–6 months will be critical. With your support, Rusty can focus on healing without the added burden of financial devastation.

Every donation — whether $5 or $500 — brings him closer to returning home for Galini’s bedtime stories and Loxley’s first steps. Please consider donating and sharing his story. Updates on Rusty’s recovery will be shared regularly.

Thank you for being part of his journey.
