Help Rusko Fight Blastomycosis
Many of you know and love Rusko — our scruffy, happy rescue pup who has brought endless joy to our lives and to everyone he meets. Sadly, Rusko was recently diagnosed with Blastomycosis, a rare and serious fungal infection.
What is Blastomycosis?
Blastomycosis is caused by a fungus that dogs can get just by inhaling spores from soil or water. Rusko likely contracted it while living on the streets in California before he was rescued. Thankfully, this fungus doesn’t grow in our area and cannot spread from dog to dog, but it is still very dangerous. It usually begins in the lungs and can spread to other parts of the body such as the lymph nodes, skin, eyes, bones, and even the brain.
In Rusko’s case, the disease was first mistaken for a recurring abscess. After multiple drainings and rounds of antibiotics, he underwent surgery to remove what turned out to be an infected lymph node. Testing revealed it was Blastomycosis. We are beyond grateful it was caught before it spread further, but the road ahead is long.
His Treatment Plan
Treating Blastomycosis is complicated, lengthy, and costly. Rusko will need:
• Months of antifungal medication (which is both expensive and hard on the liver).
• Regular bloodwork to monitor his liver and kidney function.
• Repeat chest X-rays every few months to check his lungs.
• Potential specialist visits, such as an ophthalmologist if his eyes become affected.
Even with treatment, there is a high risk of relapse, so he will need ongoing monitoring.
Why We’re Asking for Help
Between multiple procedures, his big surgery, medications, and time off work to care for him, the financial burden has quickly become overwhelming. We are fully committed to giving Rusko the best possible care, regardless of the cost or if we have help- he deserves that after everything he has endured. But if you’re able to contribute, any amount truly helps and would be so appreciated. And if donating isn’t possible, simply sharing Rusko’s story would mean the world to us.
