Hi everyone, I’m reaching out during a really difficult time for my dog, Ruger. He is an 8-year-old Australian Shepherd and truly part of our family. Recently, Ruger suffered a severe eye injury when he was outside and was accidentally gouged by cattle panel fencing that had recently been cut. The blunt force trauma from running into the cattle panel pushed his eyeball completely out of the socket. We rushed him to the emergency vet immediately, where he had surgery and stitches placed in his eyelid in an attempt to save it — which will take weeks. At this time, the vets are closely monitoring his recovery, but they are not yet sure if his eye will fully heal or if he will lose vision (or possibly the eye itself). We are doing everything we can to give him the best chance possible.

The emergency surgery, hospitalization, medications, and follow-up care are a heavy, unexpected cost for us. Ruger is more than a pet — he’s family, a loyal companion, and kind (even to our pet rabbits) and has brought so much love and joy into our lives especially, but also into the lives of so many others he’s encountered. His most favorite thing to do (besides sampling whatever you’re eating at the moment) is playing fetch/catch. Right now, he needs help to get through this and recover.
