Rufus was diagnosed with stage 5 IVDD on February 14, 2026. Surgery wasn’t an option for us due to the cost and timing, and even then, there was only a 50% chance it would work. Instead, Rufus spent six weeks on crate rest, and now he cannot empty his bladder on his own. I have to catheterize him three times a day, and he is completely incontinent with no deep pain. He’s on eight prescription medications, five of which are three times daily. The vet bills, prescriptions, and supplies are overwhelmingly expensive. Supplies like diapers, catheters, pee pads, sterile gel, surgical soap, and gloves need to be constantly replenished. In the last three weeks, Rufus has battled colitis, a UTI infection, and now severe diarrhea from antibiotics. He’s also on prescription dog food indefinitely. My son bought Rufus a wheelchair, which has helped his mobility, but the ongoing costs are still overwhelming. I am on a limited, fixed income and have been trying to find part-time employment for several months. I would do anything for Rufus—he’s my sweet boy and I love him dearly.
