My friend Rufus and I met through our shared passion for dance in 2007. I was amazed at what a beautiful dancer and person he was back then. I am even more amazed today, as he continues to shine brightly against all odds.
You see, Rufus has been diagnosed with Stage 5 kidney disease and has been undergoing dialysis for the past 15 months. If that wasn't enough to deal with, he has now been diagnosed with Stage 2 cancer. At this point in his diagnosis, he has to have a PET scan to figure out if the cancer has spread to any other areas of his body. The course of treatment right now is 2 rounds of chemo followed by 2 months of radiation, provided that the cancer has not spread. This is all happening of course, as Rufus continues to undergo dialysis.
This is a lot for any human being to deal with. I wish that there weren't anymore challenges for Rufus for me to share with you now... but there is.
Rufus is now in jeopardy of being homeless. The 2 year housing program he has been a part of has denied his request for an extension on his housing, which is up at the beginning of February. Rufus begins his cancer treatment in January. Logically, we all understand that there is no way Rufus will be able to work to pay rent on a new apartment, while in the midst of chemo, radiation and dialysis. His doctors have acknowledged that he will be exhausted and needs to rest during this time. Putting off cancer treatment to get a job to be able to pay for rent and bills is not an option because the cancer will get worse without treatment. No human being should have to make a decision between his life and a roof over his head.
Now, I know that many of you are also struggling in this very challenging time. 2020 has been a rough year for many of us. However, if there is any amount of financial support that you can possibly share with Rufus, I know he would be grateful. No amount is too small, anything helps.
Please do share this campaign with your community as well. The more people who see this and donate what they can, the more we improve our chances to reach our goal of $10,000.
In Gratitude,
Jennifer Miles
