Last week we had what we thought would be our last vet visit for a while. We got the best news, that Rue was clear of Giardia, the other parasites we had battled for months and finally up to a healthy weight.
Her pack was found dumped in the woods in Oklahoma, starving and malnourished. Rue’s Mom & Dad were also Heartworm positive and carrying multiple tick borne illnesses. We did precautionary treatments for everything possible but being so young, there was still a lot of unknown for Rue.
When they told me ALL of her tests came back clean, I cheered so loudly that the person who gave me the results couldn’t help but join me. I breathed the biggest sigh of relief that she was healthy. And another sigh of relief because most of what Rue was carrying was contagious. We had to unexpectedly treat Riggs as a precaution also and after months of appointments and multiple rounds of medications for two dogs, the vet bills were really starting to pile up. I thought, “it’s okay, we’ll get caught up now that she is healthy. All that matters is that she is healthy.”
Tonight Rue severed her Achilles tendon while doing zoomies by some metal flashing on the side of our house. Given her young age and the nature of the injury, she is heading straight into surgery tomorrow.
Tonight’s bill was $495.89 to clean and close the wound, stabilize her leg and for x-rays, antibiotics and other medications.
The estimate for the surgery is $4,000, excluding any follow up care. Rue will need to be splinted, sedated and kept immobile for weeks after surgery. We have our biggest battle yet ahead of us.
I don’t want to ask for help. I’m the person who is usually the helper. It’s my job and my joy to take care of dogs but now I have no choice but to ask for help taking care of my girl. We gave the first rounds of treatments everything we had. If you would like to help contribute towards Rue’s surgery and post surgery care, we would be forever grateful.
