I am here to ask for your help and tell the story of the strongest woman I know. But, first a little background. Ruby is my eldest sister and has long filled the role of mother hen for my other sister and I. We were raised in a very rural community where independence and resilience are commanding virtues. Ruby has both in abundance.
Sadly, in 2017 Ruby was diagnosed with cervical cancer. By this time she had relocated to Houston, TX with her son Anthony. This initial bout with cancer was not without it’s challenges. That same year while attempting to implant radiation rods a mistake was made that caused massive internal hemorrhaging and Ruby nearly bled to death. I am happy to say that she pulled through and was able to undergo chemotherapy for over a year and by the beginning of 2019 was considered to be in full remission.
Our joy was suddenly dashed when Ruby began experiencing debilitating pain around the end of 2019. Subsequently she was mis-diagnosed several times and even received unnecessary surgeries until she was finally diagnosed with cancer again. By this time the cancer had metastasized and spread to her lymph nodes, bones, liver, lungs and abdominal wall. She has since undergone 3 types of chemo and immunotherapy with no success. Through it all Ruby has been a single mother working a full time job and has asked little to no help from anyone. She is my hero.
Ruby has now entered clinical trials for a new type of immunotherapy. The only thing the doctors can tell us for sure is that it will be so intense that she will not be able to work much, if at all. This is a terrible burden coupled with the imposing thought of a possible negative outcome and lack of further treatments.
What I ask of you today is to give anything that you comfortably can to help us ease her burden with medical and living expenses while she takes on this intense treatment. All donations will go solely to her medical treatment and basic living needs. When she beats this round of cancer any remaining proceeds will go to a charity of her choice.
It is with a full heart that I thank you in advance.
