Friends and family,

Earlier this week, I noticed a decrease in Royce's energy and loss of appetite. When he woke up on Wednesday, 11/27, he didn't want to leave his crate. As soon as I picked him up, I noticed he was shaking uncontrollably and panting heavily. I rushed him to the E.R. where they did bloodwork and x-rays. Everything came back normal, and the doctor believed it was a mild case of Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) as he was experiencing some discomfort in his back. Royce still had full mobility and was walking without issues. We were sent home with anti-inflammatory and pain meds, crate rest for the next 3 weeks, and instructed to closely monitor his symptoms in case they worsened.

Thanksgiving Day arrives, and Royce's little hind legs gave out. He attempted to walk, and he collapsed on the floor. We called around for a hospital that could take him and were told he needed to be seen by a specialist. We drove out 35 mins to the nearest hospital and were given news we weren't hoping for.

Option #1: We can continue using his current meds; however, there is only a 10-20% chance that he can have a full recovery.

Option #2: IVDD surgery to remove the diseased disc material that is adding pressure to his spinal cord and allow him to walk. However, surgery will cost about $12-$15,000.

Most of you know I am that obsessed dog mom, who can't help but bring him up in every conversation. Royce has helped me get through some of life's hardest moments. He's been my light on some of my darkest and brightest days. I owe it to him to do everything possible to give him the quality of life he deserves. Royce is scheduled to undergo surgery the morning of 11/28 to help him quickly recover.
