Our Elders are in crisis, and one of our most respected community members needs our support.
My name is Celeste, and I’m fundraising for Uncle Roy Maynard, an Indigenous elder from Tasmania who has spent decades caring for community and our young people. Today, Roy finds himself in a distressing situation - without secure housing for himself and his family, and living from a caravan park while trying to find a safe place to call home.
Why We’re Asking for Help
Tasmania’s housing crisis has made it almost impossible to secure rentals, especially for families. Many of our elders are experiencing this hardship right now, quietly struggling without support.
Roy has been applying for rentals for months, but the demand is so high that he keeps missing out — and the costs to move are overwhelming. To secure a home, he needs help with:
Bond
Up-front rent
Moving costs
Basic household set-up
Every dollar will go directly towards helping Roy and his family find safe, stable accommodation.
A Life of Quiet Leadership and Service
Roy has served his community for years -guiding young Indigenous children, offering cultural knowledge, stepping in whenever someone needed help, and showing up with dignity and courage.
He has never asked for anything in return.
Roy has been a mentor and support to me through some of the hardest moments of my life. He has given so much of himself to others, quietly and humbly. Now it’s our turn to step up for him.
Why This Matters
This is more than a housing issue.
This is about keeping our elders safe and supported.
Elders hold stories, culture, wisdom and connection. They are the backbone of community wellbeing. When an elder is struggling, we all feel it.
Roy deserves a safe place to rest, to heal, to continue being the wonderful presence he is for so many.
How You Can Help
Any contribution, big or small will make a difference.
You can support by:
Donating what you can
Sharing this fundraiser with others
Spreading the word
Together we can help Roy secure a home and find stability during this difficult time.
Thank You
Thank you for taking the time to read this, and for caring about our elders. Your support means more than words can express.
Let’s give Uncle Roy the safety, respect and stability he has given to others for so many years.
