Roxy needs emergency surgery.
She was diagnosed last night at the emergency veterinary hospital in Lawrence with open pyometra, a severe and potentially life-threatening infection of the uterus. The only definitive treatment is surgery, and because of her age and tiny size, we are trying to get her the care she needs as quickly and safely as possible.
Roxy is an elderly mini Xolo, or possibly a 500-year-old bog witch, and a deeply loved member of our family. She has already been evaluated at the emergency hospital and started on antibiotics and other medication. She is currently scheduled for surgery on Thursday. Our fear is that the antibiotics may not control the infection long enough, or that the open pyometra could stop draining and become closed, requiring immediate emergency surgery and hospitalization.
The veterinary estimate for emergency treatment is $8,470, broken down approximately as:
Emergency pyometra surgery: $5,300
Three nights of hospitalization: $630/night = $1,890
Bloodwork, imaging, pre-operative testing, and other diagnostics: approximately $1,280
We also spent about $400 at the emergency vet last night, in addition to the cost of her medications. That means the veterinary expenses are already at least $8,870, with the possibility of additional medication, follow-up care, or emergency treatment if her condition worsens before Thursday. If she is okay until Thursday then the surgery itself is still higher because of her age and size.
We are asking for help because we simply cannot afford this emergency expense on our own. Any amount, even a few dollars, will help us get closer to getting Roxy the surgery she needs. If you are unable to donate, sharing this fundraiser would mean just as much to us.
Roxy has given us years of love, comfort, companionship, and an extraordinary amount of ridiculousness. We want to give our tiny girl every reasonable chance to get through this, recover, and come home.
Thank you for helping us take care of Roxy. ❤️
