Hello everyone
My name is Sandra and I am raising funds for Rose and her son Bunty who live in Jamaica and have been severely impacted by Hurricane Melissa.
Jamaica is where my father grew up so it has a very special place in my heart. Rose has been a good friend since I first met her in Jamaica 9 years ago. The roof has blown off the house she shares with her family, leaving most of their possessions wet or damaged. Bunty, who has a diagnosis of schizophrenia, has found this extremely challenging. His family are very supportive but Hurricane Melissa has left him needing emergency mental health support. Unfortunately, health services have not recovered as yet, and the care he needs is currently unavailable. When faced with a natural disaster, most people suffer psychological distress, but for those who already have a mental health condition, a catastrophe like Hurricane Melissa can cause a mental health crisis. For Bunty, it is essential he feels secure in his own home and every day routines can be re-established as quickly as possible.
Hurricane Melissa is the largest hurricane to hit Jamaica in recorded history. Many communities across the island have been devastated. Houses have lost their roofs or been completely destroyed. Food is critically low and clean water is inaccessible in many places. Power is down and is predicted to remain so in rural areas well into the new year. People's possessions have been damaged by flood waters and heavy rain. Families have been displaced and hospitals are operating with no clean water and staff shortages. Many people in Jamaica, including Rose, rely on the tourist industry, agriculture or small businesses for employment and as a result have been left without an income.
Rose and Bunty need to buy food, clean water, essential hygiene items, candles, replacement mattresses and fix their roof. My sister and I have given as much as we can afford but it isn't enough so we are asking for your help. Every contribution - no matter how small - will make a difference. Just sharing this page is a huge help.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
