In May 2021, our mother, Rosa Rodriguez, underwent what was supposed to be a simple hernia surgery in Mexico. Due to medical malpractice and negligence, the doctors nicked an intestine that leaked intestinal fluid and began leaking into her body. Unaware of this happening, my mother simply complained of back pain which was actually the fluid leaking into her front and back and causing sepsis. The more she complained, the more these doctors disregarded her. Our dad was with her through all of this and asked once again to help her with the pain. Our dad had stepped out of the room for a couple minutes to take a business call. Eventually a nurse went into the room to administer pain medication and, once again due to negligence, injected a pain medication that our mom is severely allergic to. Her body went into immediate shock, cardiac and respiratory arrest. The nurse had no idea what to do, our dad rushed in and immediately began chest compressions to get her heart beating and have her breathing on her own.
This was a living nightmare for our mom and dad.
The doctors finally rushed in to help our mom but at this point, she had been a few minutes without oxygen to the brain. The following day she was flown over from Mexico back to San Antonio and was admitted to a hospital. Our family spent countless days and nights in the hospital. My sisters and I missed work, school and deadlines. We spent so many days angry and depressed unsure of how to feel knowing our mom, our dads wife, may not come out of this alive.
Every other day our mom had surgery. First was to remove the skin, fat and muscle that was infected and dead due to the sepsis, after that was making sure the infection went away. Next was skin grafting to help close the part of her that was exposed. Without going into much detail of how much skin, fat and muscle was removed, our mom was like an apple core. But we still had more issues.
She suffered an Anoxic Brain Injury. This happens when the brain has gone far too long without any oxygen flowing, therefore the brain cells began to deteriorate and die. The doctors informed us that 75% of her brain was damaged and unrecoverable. They told us she would never be able to wake up from a coma, never be able to breathe on her own, never be able to move her arms, head or blink. But our mom is a fighter. Everyday she proved the doctors wrong. We saw her open her eyes and she began breathing on her own without any machines helping her.
After a couple very long months, she was able to come home. And this is where we are asking for your help. Our mom is unable to walk, talk or even eat on her own. She currently has a tracheotomy tube from which she breathes from, she has a feeding tube and has us to help bathe and care for her. Our mom is unable to stand on her own as she’s not fully responsive due to the brain damage. We want to begin Oxygen Therapy along with other remedies that will help heal her skin grafts and possibly help her brain heal a bit more. We also need help buying the different equipment she needs such as nutrition, medication, having a nurse to come and assist us at home as well as a wheelchair, and other equipment to help with blood flow and muscle movement.
This has been the absolute hardest and scariest time of my family’s life. This is a nightmare none of us could have predicted. Please if there is any way you are able to assist us, we would be forever grateful. Even if that means all you’re able to donate is a few dollars or a share on social media, we are incredibly thankful and grateful. We appreciate everyone that has been here in support of our family though this tough time.
Thank you,
Rodriguez Family
