I went to my annual eye exam expecting a routine checkup, but my world changed when I was told I might have eye cancer. After being referred to a specialist in Rapid City, South Dakota, my fears were confirmed—I did have cancer. The specialist then sent me to another expert in Denver, Colorado, where, after many appointments, I was diagnosed with malignant melanoma of the body in my left eye. My treatment journey is just beginning, and I am scheduled to return to Denver for radiation treatment from April 21 to April 27. My doctor has ordered me to stay in Denver during this phase, and I will need to return again on May 8 for further care.
As a single parent of two adult children, one of whom is autistic, this diagnosis has turned our lives upside down. My children will be coming with me to Denver to help care for me during my treatment and surgery. The costs of travel, lodging, food, and medications are overwhelming, especially since I am unable to work during this time. Having my children by my side is essential for my care and well-being, but it also means additional expenses that we simply cannot cover on our own.
My family and I would gratefully appreciate any funds given. I have always been the pillar of support for my children, and before this diagnosis, we were living a peaceful life. Now, we are facing uncertainty and fear, but we are holding onto hope. The cancer has not spread, but it could if I am unable to stay in Denver for the required days of treatment. Your support will help us get through this difficult time and means the world to us. Thank you for considering helping my family and me as we fight this battle together.
