Help Rory Wakemup Rebuild After Devastating Theft

Donation protected
Our friend Rory is a beloved Anishinaabe artist and activist based in Minnesota. Always in motion and in community, Rory fuses tradition with inspiration from science fiction to bring to life the possibility of a more creative and empowering world. Often in collaboration with MMIW and water protector groups, his projects have run the gamut from gallery installations to pop ups indigenizing Minnesota Capitol lawn and engaging street theater.

Right now, Rory is facing a crisis. He moved up to Bois Forte reservation earlier this year after acquiring a land lease from the tribe with the intention of starting a new life. November 15 - 21 he went to visit his children for his two year old’s birthday. When he returned, his trailers had been robbed. The bulk of the stolen goods were survival materials for the winter, including bare necessities like food, propane heaters, and tents, along with some valuable supplies from his years as a community artist/activist.

For years, Rory has been pouring everything he’s got into his public artwork and activism. He’s had a rough go of it and put what money he had left into building his new life on the land.

Donations will go straight to Rory to help him rebuild. Due to the value of the things that were stolen, he may use the first $1000 raised as a reward to help him retrieve any supplies he can and support people coming forward with information. He also needs to invest in basic winter survival supplies. If he is not able to track down his stolen property, the remaining donations will be used to help rebuild the personal and movement infrastructure that was taken.

Any donations are greatly appreciated -- supplies are also welcome. Rory’s incomplete list of stolen items is below. If you have comparable items (including dehydrated food) that you can give in lieu of a cash donation, please reach out through GoFundMe. Thank you so much.
