My dad, Ron Wood, is 82 years old—a beloved husband to his wife, Sheila, a father, grandfather, former teacher, and wrestling coach—and to those who know him best, the self-appointed (and widely accepted) “Mayor of Pinecreek.”
Recently, while on what was meant to be a relaxing trip to Maui with my mom, Sheila, his life took an unexpected and terrifying turn. While boogie boarding in the ocean, he suffered a sudden cardiac event (ventricular tachycardia) in the water. Thanks to the quick actions of those nearby, he was pulled to shore where CPR was performed, and an AED was used to shock his heart three times.
Against overwhelming odds—doctors say fewer than 5% of people over 80 survive something like this—my dad did.
He spent time in the ICU and five days in the hospital undergoing extensive testing. While we are all incredibly grateful he is still with us, the physical toll has been significant. The CPR that saved his life also left him with five broken ribs, making even simple movements painful and recovery slow. He now also requires supplemental oxygen, which adds another layer of care and coordination as he continues to recover and travel home safely.
Because of this emergency, my parents now need to extend their stay in Maui for at least two additional weeks—something they were not financially prepared for. Between unexpected medical bills, the high cost of food and lodging, and the need to fly home first class so dad has the space and support he needs—including oxygen—the expenses are quickly adding up.
Anyone who knows my dad knows he has spent his life giving—to his students, his athletes, his family, and his community. He and my mom are not the kind of people to ask for help, but right now, they could truly use it.
We are hoping to raise $10,000 by April 30 to help cover these unexpected costs and allow our dad to focus on what matters most: healing.
If you’re able to give, any amount means more than you know. And if you’re not able to donate, sharing this with others would be deeply appreciated.
Thank you for supporting my dad—the “Mayor of Pinecreek”—during this difficult time. We are all so grateful he is still here with us.
Thank you for your support,
Shelley
I love you, Dad!
