Help Ron to grow and expand his Rainwater Harvesting project

Hello! My name is Ron and I’m a water enthusiast who lives in the dry region of southern Spain.

In this area a long term water crisis has hit us due to a drought that has been worsening for years.

When it does rain we experience extreme weather, heavy and powerful storms that often cause great damage and flooding. The ground is too dry to actually soak up this vital water supply. This means we hope for rain most of the year but when it finally comes we just let it run off into the sea. This takes with it our fertile soil, floods our homes and our villages and towns.

Why aren’t we using this rain water, instead of letting it slip away?

Why are we spending so much energy and money to pump up water from faraway places? And why are we investing in desalinating water from our seas before we use the water that comes to us directly from the sky?

With these questions in mind, I have studied the subject of ‘rainwater harvesting’ and ‘water retention landscapes’ extensively over the past three years.

I completed an in-depth course with the Tamera Community in Portugal, where they have been reforesting and building lakes in dry environments for many years using water retention landscapes. Through studying books such as “Rainwater harvesting for drylands and beyond” by Brad Lancaster and “Water for Every Farm” by P.A. Yeomans, I learnt how to harvest the great abundance of water that comes from the sky, with very little effort.

My vision is to make the mountains of Spain green again with lush forests full of wildlife. I want to combat the effects of climate change, mitigating the effects of the harsh summers we are living through. I wish to provide farmers with the tools to be less dependent on water from faraway places or from deep underground. I want to help cities and towns to saturate their soil with water, which will revive natural processes in so many ways.

Ayuda a Ron a desarrollar y expandir su proyecto de “Cosecha de Agua” en las áridas regiones del sur

de España.

¡Hola! Me llamo Ron y soy un entusiasta del agua que vive en el seco sur de España.

En esta zona, una larga crisis de agua nos ha golpeado, debido a una sequía que ha ido empeorando

durante años.

Cuando llueve, sufrimos condiciones meteorológicas extremas: fuertes y poderosas tormentas que a

menudo causan grandes daños e inundaciones. El suelo está demasiado seco para absorber este

suministro vital de agua. Esperamos que llueva la mayor parte del año, y cuando por fin lo hace,

dejamos que el agua se escurra hacia el mar llevándose consigo nuestro suelo fértil, inundando nuestras

casas, nuestros pueblos y ciudades.

¿Por qué no utilizamos el agua de lluvia en vez de dejarla escapar? ¿Por qué gastamos tanta energía

(¡y dinero!) en bombear agua de lugares lejanos, o invertimos en desalinizar el agua de nuestros mares,

antes de utilizar el agua que nos llega directamente del cielo?

Con estas preguntas en mente, durante los últimos tres años he estudiado a fondo el tema de la

«recogida de agua de lluvia» y los «paisajes de retención de agua».

Asistí a un curso en profundidad con la “Comunidad Tamera” en Portugal, donde llevan años

reforestando y construyendo lagos en entornos secos, utilizando paisajes de retención de agua. Gracias

a los libros «Rainwater harvesting for drylands and beyond», de Brad Lancaster, y «Water for Every

Farm», de P.A. Yeomans, aprendí a cosechar la gran abundancia de agua que viene del cielo, con muy

poco esfuerzo.

Mi sueño es conseguir que las montañas de España vuelvan a ser verdes, con bosques frondosos,

llenos de vida salvaje. Quiero combatir los efectos del cambio climático, entre ellos los duros veranos

que estamos viviendo. También quisiera proporcionar a los agricultores de las herramientas necesarias

para que dependan menos del agua de lugares lejanos, o de las profundidades del subsuelo. Y por

último también me gustaría ayudar a las ciudades y pueblos a saturar su suelo de agua, lo que revivirá

la naturaleza de muchas maneras.
