My name is Ron Mejia. I'm a husband, father, and small business owner facing advanced prostate cancer. I'm doing everything I can to heal and be there for my family. Thank you for taking the time to read my story and for being part of this chapter of my life.
I've always believed that life is a journey of learning and growth. I've never considered myself perfect, but I've always tried to become a better person by living with compassion, purpose, and gratitude.
Then, in a single moment, my life changed when I was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer. What followed was a journey I never expected filled with difficult decisions, uncertainty, and challenges that have tested me and my family in ways I never imagined.
As I met with specialists and learned more about my diagnosis, I quickly realized this would be a very challenging mountain to climb. Additional testing revealed that my prostate cancer was more aggressive than anyone had hoped and had spread beyond the prostate. Receiving that news was heartbreaking for my family and me, but it also strengthened my determination. Rather than allowing the diagnosis to fill me with fear or discourage me, I committed myself to doing everything within my power to heal, follow my medical team's guidance, and remain present for the people I love.
My treatment includes hormone therapy and an intensive course of 40 radiation treatments at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center in Miami. Although I live in Cape Coral, I chose to receive my care there because I wanted access to a highly specialized cancer team and the treatment plan that gave me the greatest confidence. That decision means traveling approximately three hours each way and temporarily living in Miami during radiation so I can receive treatment Monday through Friday for two months.
Like many small business owners, I wear many hats. I own and operate my own residential painting business, and every part of it depends on me from meeting with customers and preparing estimates to performing the physical work, scheduling projects, and managing the business. As treatment has become more demanding, the travel, appointments, testing, and physical effects of cancer have made it increasingly difficult to keep my business running. Time that was once spent earning a living is now devoted to protecting my health and giving myself the best opportunity to heal.
Throughout this experience, my family and friends have been my foundation. Their love, encouragement, strength, and unwavering support have carried me through moments when I felt overwhelmed and reminded me that I never have to face this alone. They have kept me grounded, strengthened my faith in myself, and surrounded me with a love that words can hardly express. I truly don't know where I would be without them. One of my greatest motivations is to continue this journey so I can be there for them, just as they have always been there for me.
This experience has also changed me in ways I never expected. While it has brought financial hardship, uncertainty, and emotional challenges, it has reminded me not to take a single day for granted. It has deepened my appreciation for my family, strengthened my compassion for others, and inspired me to care for both my body and mind through exercise, daily meditation, and continual personal growth.
I've chosen not to let this diagnosis define me, but to let it refine me.
Asking for help is not something that comes naturally to me. I've always taken pride in working hard, providing for my family, and facing life's challenges with determination. But cancer has changed what I can do on my own. The demands of treatment, the travel between Cape Coral and Miami, and the time away from my business have created financial burdens that are difficult for my family to carry alone.
What Your Generosity Makes Possible
Your generosity will help provide stability while I focus on treatment and recovery. It will help with essential living expenses, travel to and from Miami for treatment, temporary lodging during radiation, and the medical-related costs that continue throughout this journey. More than anything, your support gives me something priceless: the opportunity to focus my energy on healing, being present with my family, and returning to the life I love.
As my treatment continues, I'll provide updates so you can see how your kindness is helping my family and me through this journey.
I know this journey isn't mine alone. Every act of kindness, every prayer, every encouraging message, every share, and every contribution reminds me that none of us has to face life's greatest challenges by ourselves.
To everyone who has taken the time to read my story, support my family, encourage me, or simply keep me in your thoughts, thank you. Your kindness means more than I could ever express.
I will conquer this—not alone, but with the love, support, and care of those around me.
When I come through this journey, I will pay that kindness forward by supporting and encouraging others who are facing challenges of their own. If my experience can bring hope, strength, or comfort to even one person, then something meaningful will have grown from this journey.
With gratitude,
Ron
