This time the tragedy has struck one of our family whom for many of us has been a wealth of wisdom, a comforting counselor, and to many a father figure during our years roaming the halls of the theatre department.
Fade in on the year 1974:
In 1974 the top songs were: The Way We Were by Barbara Streisand and Time in a Bottle by Jim Croce.
Richard M. Nixon resigned the Presidency.
The Miami Dolphins won the Super Bowl.
All in the Family was the highest viewed sit-com on CBS
Ron Moyer began his career teaching at the University of South Dakota.
Over the next three decades, 36 years to be exact, Ron helped to transform and shape the theatre department of USD into the powerhouse we know and respect today.
His love of the theatre and its history made his theatre history classes seem more like a passionate conversation than a lecture. The joy he felt while directing he shared with every actor lucky enough to share the stage with him. He chaired the department for many years with a steady hand, gentle words and a clear mind.
His stories were legend. His knowledge boundless. He made everyone within the department feel at home. Feel like family.
On December 4th 2017 Ron was dealt a terrible blow with the diagnosis of Stage 4 esophageal cancer. With his loving wife Cait by his side, he has elected to undergo the lengthy, physically exhausting and financially draining process of treatment.
Just this last week Ron has had to not only endure his treatments, but was admitted to the hospital with pneumonia .
Times like these are when family comes together to help a family member in need. And right now Ron and Cait are in need of some much needed love and support.
Help me give back to the man who spent his whole life giving to us the tools we needed to be successful, knowledgeable, respected professionals. Together we can help Ron and Cait with the small things and maybe not so small things in daily life that can be a burden.
There are several household repairs they are in need of and have been putting off for obvious reasons. I'd like to ensure that those repairs get taken care of and that they don't have to worry about them, rather keep their focus on Ron and his treatments and recovery.
In addition to this I would ask that anyone who donates to this cause write a personalized memory they have of Ron. I'd like to collect these memories and compile them into a book that I will then send to Ron and Cait. I'd like him to have something tangible, something he can touch and read without the need for a WI-fi connection.
You can email your memories to me or if you like you can request my address and mail them if you feel like a hand written note is more your style.
I thank you all. Ron and Cait thank you all.
Thank you for being family.
