I’m writing this on behalf of my dear friend, Romell Cervantes, because she would never ask for help for herself unless it was truly necessary.
Romell is a devoted mother of three amazing daughters, all of whom depend on her entirely. She has full custody of her children, and they have no immediate family in the United States. She has always been their protector, provider, and emotional anchor.
Romell and her daughters are survivors of domestic violence. In 2017, they lived in a shelter while rebuilding their lives from the ground up. During that incredibly difficult time, Romell was also diagnosed with a prolactinoma, a benign pituitary tumor that requires long-term medical care and monitoring. Even then, she never stopped pushing forward for her children.
Over the years, Romell has dedicated her life to helping others. Since 2018, she has worked as a nanny and caregiver, trusted by families to care for what matters most. In 2019, she became a community advocate, helping families navigate complex systems and access critical resources. By 2021, she expanded her service as a Public Notary and a Family Reunification Program Coordinator, assisting families through sensitive legal and reunification processes with compassion and integrity.
On January 10, Romell was involved in a serious car accident during dangerous winter conditions. Due to icy roads and limited visibility, she did not see a bridge ahead. Her car struck the center of the bridge, crashed, and flipped. She survived—but suffered a thoracic spine (upper back) fracture.
While we are all grateful that she is alive, this injury has drastically limited her mobility. Recovery from a spinal fracture can take several months, requiring strict activity restrictions, medical follow-ups, and rest. Romell is currently unable to lift, bend, or perform the physical work that caregiving and childcare jobs require. This sudden loss of physical ability has created an unexpected financial strain while she focuses on healing and keeping her daughters safe and stable.
Even while recovering, Romell is doing everything she can to remain proactive. She is open to remote work or remote collaboration with nonprofit organizations. She has strong people skills and experience as a virtual assistant, translator, social media manager, and community-facing coordinator. She also has experience with voice work and singing, and she brings a strategic, organized, and solutions-oriented mindset to every role she takes on.
In addition, Romell has experience recruiting and onboarding nannies and caregivers and can support families or agencies remotely in building and managing their teams while she recovers.
This fundraiser was started because Romell needs time to heal without the constant fear of how to keep everything afloat for her children. Asking for help does not come easily to her—she has always been the one helping others—but right now, support can make a meaningful difference.
Funds raised will help cover:
Medical and recovery-related expenses
Transportation to appointments
Basic household and childcare needs
Temporary loss of income during recovery
If you’re able to donate, any amount truly helps. If you’re unable to give financially, sharing this page, connecting Romell with remote work or nonprofit opportunities, or keeping her and her daughters in your thoughts and prayers is deeply appreciated.
Your support—financial, professional, or personal—helps give this family stability while Romell focuses on healing and rebuilding.
Thank you for taking the time to read her story and for showing up for a mother who has spent years showing up for others.
