Rodney Cook has always been a hard worker and has helped friends in need whenever he could. He graduated Lee County High in Leesburg, Georgia in 1988 where he was well known for his friendships in the marching band and his self-taught guitar skills. Many friends still remember him by his high school nickname, “Gooch.” He dreamed of moving to Nashville to pursue music professionally, but when our father suffered a serious work injury, Rodney stayed behind to help run the family paint business. Only after our father recovered did Rodney finally move to Nashville, where he’s lived for over 20 years, working two jobs and still finding time to play guitar in local music venues whenever possible. He’s also a die-hard Georgia Bulldogs and Atlanta Braves fan, always cheering on his favorite teams.

Recently, Rodney’s health has taken a turn. He has been told that his inguinal hernia has expanded in size, causing him pain with lifting and ladder work. He has been evaluated by a doctor who has recommended surgery. Without medical insurance and with limited healthcare support in Tennessee, Rodney has been unable to move forward with treatment. The physical demands of his job as a house painter have become too much, and he’s unable to work regularly or pursue his passion for music. Our family has contributed as much as we can, but the costs of surgery, medical care, and basic living expenses are more than we can manage alone.

As a family nurse practitioner, I’ve met many patients who struggled with limited access to medical care due to lack of financial resources. Although quite familiar with social services available to communities in Georgia, I have found Tennessee’s system to be very different The system pitfalls have made it difficult for Rodney to get the financial assistance he needs. We’re still pursuing every option, but right now, we’re asking for your help so Rodney can get back on his feet, return to the work he loves, and hopefully play guitar on stage again.
