Leaders with the Kairos Center are raising emergency funds for our friend Rodger and his family in Harlem. Rodger is a 19-year-old student, activist, and a member of Kairos' Young Organizer Survival Corps. He is home from college for spring break and staying in NYC to support his mom and 17-year-old sister. Rodger’s mom is undocumented, has serious health issues, and can’t make ends meet. The family is now facing a definite eviction threat with a deadline of 3/30.
They are working with a housing lawyer whom the family trusts, but immediate resources are needed to cover basic survival needs and to bridge this crisis. Donations will pay for:
- Food for the family;
- Uber/transportation to medical appointments;
- Emergency housing costs if they are evicted (shelter, short-term stays);
- Utilities and Incidentals (phone, internet, household essentials)
What we’ve done so far:
Rodger and his family have engaged a housing lawyer and are pursuing legal options. Rodger is exploring transferring to college in NYC or taking a leave to support his family longer-term, if necessary. Rodger has a network of friends in NYC who are working to connect them with public resources and support.
How funds will be used and distributed:
Funds will be distributed directly to cover the listed needs and help Rodger and his family navigate this crisis.
Why your help matters:
This is an urgent situation where small gifts add up very quickly — supporting the health of an ailing mother, protecting a teenager and her mother from homelessness, and giving Rodger time to find a longer-term plan for his family.
How you can help now:
- Donate what you can;
- Share this page widely (social media, community groups, faith organizations);
- Message us if you can offer temporary housing, groceries, or legal/medical referrals.
