My name is Roderick Bell and I'm currently a senior at Nile C. Kinnick High School with a 4.0 GPA. I was a starter for the varsity basketball that achieved the 2nd place in our division. Basketball has always been my passion and my dedication has continuously grows. I am also going to college to play the sport. I go to the gym to work on my skills and train for multiple hours a day everyday of the week. I do strength workouts 4-5 times a week and often get up at 5am to workout before school. Since my dad is in the military, I live and play overseas. "According to NCAA.org, 3.4 percent of boys and 3.8 percent of girls make it from high school to an NCAA basketball roster, and just 1.0 and 1.2 percent to a Division I university team. And that’s in the States. Now, imagine a player is thousands of miles away from the States, toiling for a DODEA or international-school team in the Pacific. No statistics exist at NCAA.org for that category, but players, coaches and recruiters all say that makes those odds decrease exponentially" says Dave Ornauer of Pacific Sports Stars and Stripes News in his article about athletes abroad. Playing overseas makes it much harder to get noticed since the travel is expensive and it's very time consuming to make the trip. "Kids get seen and recruited by close to 1,000 coaches every summer" says John Alexander, Global Squad director, of the camp.
Global Squad, which takes place in Pennsylvania, gives an opportunity to players overseas to get a month long of high level training, twice a day. There are multiple mentors with much experience that also give seminars there. Towards the end of the camp there are multiple tournaments that exposes players to stateside level competition and college recruiters. Last year, 56 players got recruited by colleges and prep schools for scholarships and financial aid. Of the five people that I know of attending the camp last year, they all got offers from colleges and prep schools. One of them has already played a year at their prep school and now is looking to go to college. Another one will be playing at the prep school they were recruited by this upcoming year. The last three are now going to attend colleges with scholarships this upcoming season.
I would like to use this as an opportunity to not only develop my skills, but to also help me receive a higher scholarship award for college and hopefully other opportunities to come of it. I would greatly appreciate it if you could donate, so I can take advantage of this opportunity.
