Help Robin Stone with Medical Bills and Care
Donation protected
My mom, Robin Stone, had to be rushed to the ER for an emergency surgery. Unfortunately, after a long hospital stay and many medical complications, she suffered a traumatic brain injury and has been hospitalized since September 2024.
I'm Pattianne, one of her daughters, and I'm organizing this GoFundMe to help pay for medical bills and long-term care. Every donation, no matter the amount, is very much appreciated and will make a difference during this horribly difficult time.
Events:
Following the emergency surgery, my mom was in the ICU on life support for the next 3 weeks. She had sepsis twice, dialysis for kidney failure, as well as other medical complications. When she was finally transferred out of ICU to the main floor of the hospital, she had a mucus plug, which led to a respiratory event. This caused her to suffer cardiac arrest, and she was not breathing for 6 minutes. Doctors performed CPR and were able to bring her back.
The doctors had us go in on October 16th, 2024, for a family meeting. Mom was put in a medically induced coma, intubated, and her pacemaker was removed. At this meeting, they shared that they did not know the extent of her brain damage; she has myoclonus, which complicates doing an MRI and EEG. This entire time, they have been concerned about QOL and have been proceeding slowly.
Once they were able to do the MRI and EEG, we learned that she suffered a stroke and hypoxic brain injury from the cardiac arrest. They slowly weaned her off the sedatives keeping her in a medical coma, but she did not "wake up" or respond for weeks.
The doctors mostly delivered grim news. They said barring a miracle, that she would not survive or have any sort of meaningful recovery.
November 14th, 30 days post-cardiac arrest/coma, my mom opened her eyes. It was brief, but she looked directly at me and my dad. She did not respond otherwise to me or doctors, hence the "coma-like" state. The doctors denied her opening her eyes, despite me showing them a video. This was incredibly frustrating for my family to hear; however, I do understand they are looking strictly at medical data and the odds based on other patients.
December 8th: This was the first time a nurse acknowledged my mom opening her eyes.
December 18th: We had another family meeting, and the doctors stated that they did not believe my mom would ever do anything more than open her eyes. We discussed hospice care but held off on moving her. This same day, for the first time, she not only looked at me and my dad but moved her head on her own and looked at my aunt and uncle (her brother) in the same room.
December 25th: I am legitimately starting to cry typing this out... my mom moved her thumb for me and my dad. This was the FIRST time since the cardiac arrest that she was able to do something on command; I asked her to do it 4-5 times for me, and she did it each time.
December 31st-January 2nd: Robin has miraculously started to answer our questions and move different parts of her body!!! I am still in disbelief. She's able to respond by nodding or shaking her head, she can move her thumbs, and even waved at one of the nurses. She still goes in and out of sleep, is nonverbal, and is laying in bed, but we know recovery will be slow. This is HUGE and amazing progress that the doctors said would likely not happen.
