Hi! My name is Robin. I’m a disabled digital artist, and I’m raising funds to help me finish my undergraduate degree in Canada and build a more accessible future for myself.

I was studying Digital Art at Tecnológico de Monterrey with a scholarship. As a disabled student, I needed academic accommodations that were approved by my program directors, including accommodations that allowed me to complete coursework with alternative software that met my accessibility needs.

Unfortunately, having those accommodations approved did not mean they were respected by every professor.

Some professors refused to accept or grade work I completed under my approved accommodations. I was told that no one could force them to accept or grade my work, despite those accommodations having already been authorized by my program directors.

What began as an accessibility issue eventually had serious academic and financial consequences.

I became responsible for university costs that had previously been covered through my scholarship. I was pressured into taking on credit to cover those costs, leaving me with university-related debt that I am still trying to resolve.

As those academic and financial consequences continue to accumulate, I am now faced with the painful reality that I will not be able to finish my undergraduate degree in Mexico.

But I don’t want that to mean giving up on my degree.

I have now submitted my application to Emily Carr University of Art + Design in Canada for the 3D Computer Animation BMA, with the goal of finishing my undergraduate education there. I’m currently waiting for access to the applicant portal so I can complete the remaining application requirements, including my portfolio, academic documents, and English-language testing.

I’ve also recently been accepted to the Yellowbrick x NYU Modern Screenwriting program in Playwriting and Screenwriting with a 75% scholarship, and I’m currently completing the program through a 12-month payment plan.

For me, this isn’t about starting over. It’s about getting the opportunity to finish something I worked incredibly hard for, without having to sacrifice the accessibility I need to do it.

How this fundraiser will work

I’m dividing this fundraiser into stages instead of asking for every possible future expense at once. Each stage will have a concrete purpose, and I’ll update the campaign as I reach each milestone and have confirmed costs for what comes next.

Stage 1 — Immediate Stability & Application

My current Stage 1 goal is MX$40,000.

I’ve reduced my initial fundraising goal so that this first stage focuses specifically on the expenses I need to address right now: keeping my housing stable, resolving immediate university-related costs, completing the remaining requirements for my Emily Carr application, and maintaining a small amount for food and unexpected expenses while I work through the next steps.

• Approximately MX$24,700 in university-related debt and the outstanding balance connected to my Tecnológico de Monterrey studies (approximately US$1,450)

• MX$600 for my academic transcript (approximately US$35), which has now been paid using money that had been set aside for groceries

• CA$112.20 for my Emily Carr international application fee, plus transaction and currency-conversion fees, which has now been paid also using money that had been set aside for groceries

• US$75 for the Duolingo English Test required to complete my application. This has now been paid using money that would otherwise have gone toward essential living and medical expenses.

• US$35 for my current Yellowbrick x NYU Modern Screenwriting monthly payment

• Approximately MX$1,000 for food and other immediate necessities (approximately US$60)

• GoFundMe transaction fees, currency-conversion differences, and any small application-related expenses that arise while completing this stage

My goal for this stage isn’t simply to pay bills and return to zero. It’s to create enough immediate stability for me to complete the remaining application requirements, keep my housing secure, continue my studies, look for work, and move forward without immediately needing to borrow again.

Once these immediate expenses are covered, I’ll update the fundraiser with what has been paid, what remains, and the next confirmed costs rather than asking for every future expense in advance.

Stage 2 — Admission, Enrollment & Accessibility

If I’m accepted to Emily Carr, I’ll update this fundraiser with the confirmed costs required to accept my offer and secure my place.

At that point, I’ll also need updated medical documentation for the university’s accessibility team. This will include a new neurological assessment, an updated accessibility letter, and any testing my neurologist determines is necessary.

I’m not including estimates for those costs in Stage 1 because I want to wait until I know exactly what documentation and testing will be required.

Stage 3 — Preparing for Canada

Once my enrollment is secured, I’ll update the fundraiser again with the actual costs involved in preparing to study in Canada.

Rather than estimating expenses months in advance, I want to keep this fundraiser transparent and document each new stage as I reach it.

Finishing my degree would mean getting the opportunity to complete an education that I’ve worked incredibly hard for, despite circumstances I never expected when I first entered university.

More than anything, I want the opportunity to build the next part of my life around making art, learning, and creating, and to finish the degree I already started.
