Help Roberto’s Family with his Condition

I have a good friend named Roberto who needs our immediate help. Roberto’s family and friends are hoping to raise much needed funds as a surprise to him and his family. A few months ago Roberto, 47, was diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer. His treatment has been difficult and the prognosis is now poor. The bills are mounting and we fear that God might call Roberto home soon. He and his family need immediate financial assistance. Despite all the challenges, they will never ask for help so we are stepping up and turning to folks in our community who might be looking for a feel-good cause to get behind at a personal level. Now, let me tell you about our friend Roberto.

Roberto, 47, and wife, Mervat, have lived in the Raleigh area for many years and have three kids and a grandchild. I first met them a few years ago through a mutual friend. Roberto works in home construction and remodeling were his attention to detail and work ethic can be on display.

This family is one of the most generous, honest, and hard-working families, I’ve ever known. They have never been in trouble and work so very hard for everything they own. I wish more families could be like his.

A few months back, and while recovering from my own cancer treatments, Roberto and his son were working on my bathroom when he complained about chronic dizziness. We urged him to see a doctor and after multiple complaints, he eventually did. The diagnosis was not vertigo as expected but instead an aggressive form of brain cancer. The finding was devastating to him and his family -yet despite the news and the fears, he continued to work to pay the family bills. Surgery was not an option, so he started radiation and chemotherapy; it didn’t go well. There was a lot of nausea and vomiting but he fought through it and still worked when he was up to it to support his family. Initially the treatment worked but he soon hit his exposure limit for radiation and a recent scan now shows the tumor has grown significantly in the last month. The prognosis is not good and while Roberto maintains the drive to continue working, everyone is worried the cancer can’t be contained. Roberto’s main concern now is the well-being of his family if he gets called home. Unlike many folks, there is no life insurance, retirement, or social security; there are however a lot of bills to pay that he needs help with.

I don’t know what the magic amount that will set the family up for success should be but any amount will certainly help. 100% of the proceeds will go to this family who desperately needs our help -every single dime. I know the timing sucks for this request given the financial challenges brought on by a faltering economy but please remember, he is on God’s time right now not ours.

Hace unos meses, y mientras me recuperaba de mis propios tratamientos contra el cáncer, Roberto y su hijo estaban trabajando en mi baño cuando se quejó de mareos crónicos. Le instamos a ver a un médico y después de múltiples quejas, finalmente lo hizo. El diagnóstico no fue vértigo como se esperaba, sino una forma agresiva de cáncer cerebral. El hallazgo fue devastador para él y su familia, sin embargo, a pesar de las noticias y los temores, continuó trabajando para pagar las facturas familiares. La cirugía no era una opción, así que comenzó la radiación y la quimioterapia; no salió bien. Había muchas náuseas y vómitos, pero luchó y todavía trabajaba cuando estaba a la altura para mantener a su familia. Inicialmente, el tratamiento funcionó, pero pronto alcanzó su límite de exposición a la radiación y una exploración reciente ahora muestra que el tumor ha crecido significativamente en el último mes. El pronóstico no es bueno y, aunque Roberto mantiene el impulso de seguir trabajando, a todo el mundo le preocupa que el cáncer no se pueda contener. La principal preocupación de Roberto ahora es el bienestar de su familia si lo llaman a casa. A diferencia de muchas personas, no hay seguro de vida, jubilación o seguridad social; sin embargo, hay muchas facturas que pagar con las que necesita ayuda.

No sé cuál debería ser la cantidad mágica que preparará a la familia para el éxito, pero cualquier cantidad sin duda ayudará. El 100 % de las ganancias irá a esta familia que necesita desesperadamente nuestra ayuda, cada centavo. Sé que el momento apesta para esta solicitud, dados los desafíos financieros provocados por una economía vacilante, pero por favor recuerde, él está en el momento de Dios en este momento, no en el nuestro.
