Help Commander Roberto Ortiz Rebuild His Life Wearing a badge is a silent vow: to protect others while knowing there is always a possibility that you may not make it home at the end of the night. As members of the first responder community, at Two Cops One Donut Podcast, we understand what that sacrifice means. That is why today we want to share the story of a true brother in blue: Commander Roberto Ortiz, from Chihuahua, Mexico. Roberto is a warrior of life who fights every day to stand again. Four years ago, while serving his community with a deep love for his country and his profession, Roberto survived a catastrophic attack during an operation. He spent approximately seven days in a coma, endured a prolonged hospitalization, and faced almost no chance of survival. He survived. But he lost both of his legs above the knee. And surviving was only the beginning. Learning to live with bilateral above-knee amputation became an entirely different battle — physically, emotionally, financially, and for his family. During the first two years, Roberto and his family carried much of the overwhelming burden of recovery on their own. To keep him alive, pay for specialized therapy, and continue supporting their household, they had to sacrifice much of what they had spent decades building: vehicles, savings, and the land where they had planned to build their home. Over the past two years, they have received valuable support from the Government of Chihuahua, something Roberto and his family are deeply grateful for. But the reality of living with bilateral amputation is a long-term need that goes far beyond what one family can reasonably carry alone. Prostheses are not a luxury. They are mobility, independence, and life. For a person with bilateral above-knee amputation, advanced electronic prosthetic systems needed to restore mobility and independence can represent an investment of more than $400,000 USD. But that investment does not mean the need ends there. Prosthetic systems require continuous care and maintenance. Every year, there can be significant expenses related to components, custom sockets, liners, suspension and suction systems, adjustments, repairs, rehabilitation, and physical therapy. For Roberto, these ongoing needs can represent approximately $20,000–$30,000 USD per year, depending on the components and services required. And approximately every four to five years, major prosthetic systems may need to be replaced or require another significant investment that can once again exceed $400,000 USD. We want to be completely transparent about this: This is not a need that ends when prosthetic legs are obtained. It is a long-term reality. This campaign is intended to help Roberto not only obtain the advanced prosthetic technology he needs to regain greater mobility and independence, but also to help address the ongoing costs that come with rebuilding a life after bilateral amputation. A campaign built on brotherhood This initiative comes from the heart of the first responder community and from people who heard Roberto’s story and decided they did not want to simply remain spectators. And we want to make an open invitation. He believes it simply changed form. His body changed. His circumstances changed. But his purpose is still alive.
