My name is Robert, and I’m reaching out for help as I face a challenging time in my life. I work part-time as a valet attendant, but since mid-December, I’ve been on unpaid medical leave due to serious health issues. Last year, I was diagnosed with primary osteoarthritis in my knees, osteoarthritis in both hips, and lumbar spondylosis. In December, I learned that I would need hip replacement surgery. After meeting with my surgeon on February 9th, my surgery is now scheduled for April 17th. Following the procedure, I’ll need about three months of physical therapy and healing, which means I’ll be unable to work for almost eight months in total, with no income during that time.

Unfortunately, I have exhausted all my available sick leave and vacation time, and my savings will only cover my rent for March. My monthly expenses are ongoing. I’ve applied for LIHEAP to help with utilities and am waiting to hear if I qualify. I also receive food stamps, but they were unexpectedly discontinued at the end of January 2026, and I have a call scheduled to address this. As the days pass, my anxiety grows as I worry about how I’ll manage to pay my bills and keep a roof over my head until I can return to work.

As many of you know, I received my Associates degree in Behavioral Health Support in December 2024. I have been actively pursuing my new career, helping those who struggle with mental health issues and substance use disorder. This unexpected health crisis has put this search on hold.
