Help Rob Recover from Malaria Abroad
Donation protected
Hi all,
I'm reaching out to ask for support for someone with an incredibly big heart—Rob MacKichan—who is currently recovering from a serious case of malaria he contracted while in Mexico.
Rob traveled to Mexico to further his education in diving, working toward his Intro to Cave Diving certification and preparing to take the next step in his AIDA Freedive Judge career at the Azul Challenge. Unfortunately, he had to miss the event due to being hospitalized with malaria—marking the first confirmed case in the area in over four years.
Thanks to the incredible medical team at Costamed in Playa del Carmen, Rob received a quick diagnosis and immediate treatment, which likely saved his life. He spent several days in the hospital undergoing intensive testing and monitoring, and he’s still completing his treatment before he can return home. Thankfully, he’s expected to make a full recovery with no lasting damage.
What makes this even more difficult is the financial strain. As a U.S. Veteran, Rob receives healthcare through the VA-but that coverage does not apply to medical care outside the country unless it’s service-related. They are filing a claim, but the chances of reimbursement are slim. So far, medical bills have surpassed $13,000 USD, all of which had to be paid up front.
If you know Rob, you know he’s always the first to help—whether it’s stepping in with life-saving skills, checking in on a friend in need, or offering support without being asked. He has a heart of gold and always puts others first.
Now he needs us. Rob hasn’t been able to work during this ordeal, and the financial toll has been heavy. If you’re able and feel moved to support him and Liz during this incredibly difficult time, any contribution—no matter how small—would mean the world.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this,
