On May 18, 2023, our friend Rita’s life was forever changed. She was struck by a drunk driver, an unimaginable event that left her with devastating injuries. The driver had very minimal insurance coverage and she has been left with the responsibility of all the medical bills. Despite the incredible efforts of her doctors and MANY reconstructive surgeries, she now faces the heartbreaking reality of having her foot amputated.

This surgery is only the beginning of her long road to recovery. Rita will spend 4–6 weeks in the hospital and a rehabilitation facility as she heals and learns to navigate life after amputation. After that, she will need to wait until she can be fitted for a prosthetic foot before returning to work — a process that will take months.

During this time, she will be unable to work and will face mounting expenses:

• Medical bills and rehabilitation costs

• Rent, utilities, and daily living expenses

• Travel to and from medical appointments

• Prosthetic fitting and mobility aids
