Help Riley to walk again after a devastating accident

Hi my name is Rebecca. Riley is my beautiful 5-year-old little dog and a much-loved member of the family.

Last weekend Riley managed to get out whilst visiting friends in an unfamiliar area and went missing overnight. As you can imagine, we were frantic with worry. Family, friends, and a number of kind volunteers searched the area for her, hoping we would find her safe.

Sadly, we had no luck.

Early on the next morning we received a call from the wonderful team at Mo Chara Animal Rescue, who told us Riley had been found on the motorway at around 3am with serious injuries to both of her back legs from a hit and run. Luckily, some kind person found her injured and cold on the motorway and brought her to safety.

Riley was immediately brought to Brittas Veterinary Hospital where the veterinary team worked quickly to stabilise her as she was in shock. The team also treated a deep wound to her legs and managed her pain.

Due to the severity of her injuries, Riley had to then be transferred on Monday morning to Sunbeam Veterinary Hospital in Cork for specialist orthopaedic care.

Riley underwent major surgery today to save her legs, this involved tension pins being inserted in order to stablilise the breaks in the hope of repairing the damage.

While the cost of Riley’s treatment is significant, without this surgery she would never walk again, which would have been absolutely heartbreaking for our little baby who loves following us everywhere and being part of everything we do.

Although we have already paid significant veterinary fees to ensure Riley received the emergency treatment and the complex surgery she urgently needed, there is still a very large ongoing cost for her continued care. Riley will require at least six weeks of recovery, including follow-up appointments each week, X-rays, medication, and rehabilitation. While her prognosis is good at the moment, there is also the possibility that further surgery may be needed depending on how the broken bones and wounds heal.

Riley is a tiny dog with a huge heart and the centre of our home. She brings so much love and happiness into our lives, and all we want is to see her back on her feet, happy and pain-free again.

We are doing everything we can to cover the costs ourselves, but any support would mean the world to us. Every donation will go directly towards Riley’s surgery, treatment, and recovery.
