LET'S HELP RILEY GO PLACES (Literally!)
[Update: 8/13] With a generous matching pledge, we now only need to raise $155 to unlock the match and complete the campaign. Let's do this and support Riley to go places!
[Update: 7/29] We're over 3/4 of the way there! Please help us share this campaign with your community; even donations of $5, $20, or $50 are appreciated!
We are fundraising to help our dear friend and community member Riley replace their stolen mobility scooter. In late May, Riley’s mobility scooter was stolen from their car in Oakland. They are disabled and can only walk a short distance without pain, so their scooter was what made it possible for them to travel outside their home and yard—to go out and live their life.
With a mobility scooter, Riley will be able to walk their dog, Gabby, at their favorite spot on Point Isabel; visit client sites and continue to build out their accessibility consulting business; and do all the small, daily things that they want to do as society begins to reopen. To quote Riley, “All people, no matter their abilities, deserve dignity, respect, and access to the world.” Help us replace their mobility scooter ASAP so Riley has access to the world again!
ABOUT RILEY
Riley is a queer, trans, superfat, neurodivergent, disabled, and mentally ill Accessibility Advocate and Consultant working to improve access and inclusion for everyone. As the founder and creative force behind their business Approaching Access, Riley helps small business owners craft an accessibility plan to make their business accessible to the entire community. Riley also has a Master’s in Sexology and does Accessible Sex Education and Advocacy and is currently developing accessible sex gear. They love podcasts, comedy, singing in their trans choir, connecting with friends, and doing everything they can to contribute to a better world. By always showing up as their authentic self, they create space for their friends and community to do the same. They are funny, kind, and pretty awesome.
HERE’S HOW YOU CAN SUPPORT!
1) Donate! Your donation will go directly to helping Riley to buy a new mobility scooter (which retail at around $3400). Additional funds raised will go toward scooter upgrades, an additional battery for the scooter, and retrofitting their car to prevent another theft (plus cc processing fees). Donate here or through Venmo or the Cash app: @MyBodyIsValid (Venmo confirmation digits: 4509)
2) Hire Riley! Riley’s business, Approaching Access, takes a creative and multi-pronged approach to helping small businesses become accessible to the entire community, including the 20% of customers who are disabled. If you are a small business owner, download the free accessibility assessment and then sign up for a consultation call!
3) Share! Personal shares of this campaign help us reach our goal sooner. Would you please share directly with 2-4 people who might be interested in supporting Riley and this campaign?
Any of these actions will not only support Riley, but also their work at Approaching Access, and serve as a vehicle (literally!) for the start of a revolution in the way we think about access and inclusion for all. Thank you for joining us in support of our friend and in service of that vision!
