Hi, my name is Louise and I’m Riley’s mummy. I am fundraising to be able to purchase Riley an Acheeva Bed, something which is essential to improve Riley’s quality of life.

Riley is 8 years old, medically complex, life limited and requires 24/7 care. Riley has profound multiple learning disabilities, including dystonic cerebral palsy, scoliosis, severe restricted lung disease and Lennox gastaut syndrome. Unfortunately as Riley has gotten bigger, so has his health complications resulting in long hospital admissions and missing school.

Riley is non mobile and with his tolerance for his wheelchair being very low, he is often lying down isolated in bed, due to his chronic pain and discomfort. This unfortunately means he cannot access the rest of his house or the garden for quality family time. It also means family days out are limited to an hour or two and more recently has not been able to go due to the intolerance of his wheelchair.

This is starting to cause concerns due to his scoliosis getting worse and being in one position, his skin is starting to break down in areas causing even more pain for him.

Despite all of Riley’s challenges you will always see the biggest smile on his face and the simple things really bring him the most joy. He loves going outside, arts and crafts, listening to music, and socialising. This is something that hasn’t been able to happen as much at home, in the last year due to Riley’s deteriorating health, isolation to his bed and something that as a family is devastating.

The Acheeva bed is something that allows for changes in position and a system to be used to help Riley be more comfortable. He uses this in school and is able to access a variety of areas including outside, the assembly hall and classrooms. Having this at home means he will have access to other areas of the house, such as the living room to watch movies with us, the kitchen to do arts and crafts and the garden, allowing socialisation with friends.

I have exhausted all options through the trust, social workers and even looked into some charities, unfortunately they are based in England and we cannot use them. So this is my last option to try and get Riley what he needs and to make memories as a family
