Rico is my sweet senior dog who has been deeply loved by our family for 3 years now. Rescued as a 13-year-old, he has been amazingly spry, surprising us all with his energy and spirit. When life circumstances made it impossible for me to care for him, my retired parents stepped in and welcomed Rico into their home in Florida. Since then, they have given him a wonderful life, caring for him as if he were their own. He is thriving in their loving environment, and we feel so lucky to have him as part of our family.
Recently, Rico suffered a devastating injury and severely dislocated his elbow. What began as a frightening accident quickly turned into a long and difficult medical journey. His first surgery was unsuccessful, and he was referred to an orthopedic specialist for two additional surgeries to save his leg and hopefully restore function. Rico’s recovery is still ongoing—he now requires weeks of antibiotics, pain medications, follow-up imaging, rehabilitation, and physical therapy. There will be additional veterinary expenses in the weeks and months ahead as we work to give him the best possible chance at a full recovery.
My parents are retired and living on a fixed income, but they never hesitated to do what Rico needed. The financial impact has been significant, and they have even had to cancel their annual summer trip to Massachusetts to be near family. Unfortunately, I am not in a financial position to help cover these expenses myself, which is why I am reaching out on their behalf. We are asking for help with Rico’s continuing medical care, including orthopedic follow-ups, imaging, physical therapy, medications, and any additional treatments needed during his recovery.
