I want to start by saying that I appreciate all of you taking the time to hear me out in my hopes to help ease my dad, Matthew Coffey, out of debt and into retirement.
My dad has faced more than his share of challenges in life, but these last few years have really felt like one hardship after another. In April of 2022, at 51 years old, my dad got diagnosed with congestive heart failure and needed to have a pacemaker put in. It was a very scary time for him and our family as he lost his own father to heart issues at a very young age. During this time, my father lived with a longtime family friend who unexpectedly passed away last year. This left my dad devastated and unfortunately, without a place to live. In an effort to find stability, he bought a house from a family member, only to discover that the roof needed immediate replacement—an expense he wasn’t prepared for. To cover these costs, he’s had to take out loans, and now the bills, interest on credit cards, and mounting debt are making it nearly impossible for him to catch up. Filing taxes this year, for his first year as a homeowner also added an unexpected cost of nearly $10,000 in taxes owed. Life just keeps happening and I can’t stand to see him exhausted and drowning.
For the past 4 years, his doctor and our family have been encouraging and pleading with my dad to retire. This April, he reached his goal of 30 years at Home Depot and FINALLY agreed to retire! I’m so proud of his work ethic but it is time to relax and let his heart heal so that he can live a longer life
The funds raised will go directly toward helping with medical bills, paying off the loans for the new roof, and easing the burden of debt that keeps piling up from late fees and interest. This support will help my dad find some peace and stability as he transitions into retirement, after a lifetime of working hard and caring for his family.
My dad means everything to me. He hasn’t had the easiest life, and he somehow managed to raise three kids all on his own. He deserves to relax and feel at peace for once in his life. I want to be a part of giving that to him, but I can’t do it on my own. Any support you can offer would mean the world to us and help give my dad the fresh start he truly deserves.
