My name is Tanvi Tigulla, and I am writing on behalf of the James S. Rickards High School Youth In Government Chapter, a YMCA-sponsored program dedicated to helping students become active participants in democracy. Youth In Government (YIG) gives students the opportunity to step into the roles of legislators, lawyers, lobbyists, public speakers, and community advocates, helping them find their voice. This is our first year establishing a chapter at Rickards, and as this year’s President, I can say that we are incredibly excited to build a program that reflects our school’s value of student empowerment. Our goal is to create a space for all students, regardless of background, to explore their interests in government and more.
The biggest opportunity Youth In Government offers is the State Assembly Conference in April, where students from all over Florida gather in Tallahassee for a simulation of the state government. Students do much throughout the few days they attend the conference, from writing bills to participating in mock trials. This event can be described as life changing to many, as it is the opportunity that can open students to more options and passions. However, attending the State Assembly requires a registration fee for each student, and as a brand new chapter, we are working hard to raise enough funds to ensure our students can participate. The experience also provides students with volunteer hours and the chance to earn college credits.
Your contribution would mean so much to us. By donating, you are investing in students who are always eager to learn. Your kindness will help open doors for many young minds that can now explore new ideas. Please consider supporting our chapter and empowering the next generation of leaders.
