Those of you that know our Dad have found him to be a giving person, but he likes to stay private. He spent many years serving the Order of DeMolay as a Member from age 13, Chapter Advisor and Chairman primarily for Lynn Chapter and JG Whittier Chapter in Haverhill. He enjoyed the experience of assisting the members to better fulfill their lives and had an additional family of sons and daughters (Chapter Sweethearts) that all called him “Dad” MacInnis. He also enjoyed serving on the State Level in various capacities, as well as DeMolay International as a Deputy Member and then an Active Memberof the Supreme Council.
Our Dad went to the hospital by ambulance on 8/7 with chest pain, a fever and shortness of breath. He thought he was having a heart attack or something to do with COVID-19.
They treated him as a COVID patient the first day, but that test came back negative the next day and they got him over to a regular room. It was a relief.
Over the next 8 days they ran a battery of tests on him and some were painful including a bone marrow biopsy.
They found that he had some ulcers in his stomach, which is totally fixable by medication. They are also treating him for acute asthma, which he had since he was a kid and no attacks during his adult years until now.
We saved the worst for last. He has been diagnosed with MDS, which is a bone marrow disorder (Robin Roberts from GMA had this). He is currently undergoing chemotherapy, which just started on Monday 9/14.
In the end he will receive a bone marrow or stem cell transplant and have to spend 30 days in the hospital.
Unfortunately, Dad did not have health insurance for his hospital stay running from 8/7 to 8/16 and has incurred some large medical expenses. Fortunately, he was able to obtain insurance effective 9/1 for the ongoing treatment, but those premiums are only covered until 12/31/20 and they will be out of pocket to him effective 1/1/21.
We are hoping that you can assist in anyway possible to lessen the burden for him during this difficult time. We appreciate any assistance that you can provide. Please feel free to share this link in your Facebook profile for anyone who wishes to donate. Thank you
