Richie has been a cherished part of our community since we first moved here three years ago. He’s the kind of neighbor who starts his mornings visiting friends and always has a kind word for everyone. Yesterday, by a stroke of luck, Richie stopped by our house to check on a project we were working on. As we stood outside chatting about the endless tasks of homeownership, we suddenly heard an explosion and saw a black plume of smoke rising in the distance. Four of us, including Richie, jumped into a golf cart to investigate. As we turned the corner onto Richie’s street, our hearts sank—the fire was at his home. In a matter of moments, Richie lost everything. His house is now uninhabitable, and all of his belongings are gone. The shock and heartbreak of seeing his life’s memories consumed by fire is something none of us will ever forget. Later that day, as if things couldn’t get any more surreal, Richie was asked to meet the officers at his house. He and his buddy jumped on his golf cart from our place, and unbelievably, the golf cart itself caught on fire. It’s hard to imagine facing so much loss in a single day. In the aftermath, our friends and neighbors have come together to help. Richie has a place to stay for now, and many have donated clothes and essentials. But Richie is on a fixed income, and the financial burden of clearing his home and debris is overwhelming. The future is uncertain—Richie has loving family in New York who would welcome him home, and that may be his next step. We want to do everything we can to ease his stress and help him rebuild, whether that means starting over here or moving closer to family. We know times are tough for everyone, and any donation—no matter the amount—will make a difference for Richie as he navigates the next few months. If you’re unable to give financially, please keep Richie in your thoughts and prayers. Your kindness and support mean the world to him and to all of us who care about him.
