If you know Richard Rosendale, then you know what a gift he is to our community. For over 40 years, Richard has been a welcoming face in Monterey and Carmel’s hospitality scene — especially at The Flying Fish Grill, where he has greeted guests with warmth, kindness, and care for more than 30 years.

Richard’s compassion, humor, and love for people make everyone feel at home. Beyond the restaurant, he has given back year after year, cycling in the California Coast Classic with the Arthritis Foundation for 25 years to raise funds for a cure. He has also been honored with the John Spadaro Lifetime Achievement Award in Hospitality (2022) for his decades of dedication.

But now, Richard needs our help.

On February 6, 2022, after his daily spin class, Richard suffered a serious shoulder injury that required major surgery and 8 months of physical therapy. The damage left him with reduced mobility and strength, making it difficult to continue the work he loves. While he returned to The Flying Fish Grill, the financial toll of medical bills, rehabilitation, and lost income has been overwhelming. Insurance has not fully covered his care, leaving him struggling to keep up with rising costs.

Richard has always been there for others — whether through his hospitality, his community service, or simply sharing a kind word and a smile. Now it’s our turn to be there for him.
