A Devoted Dad, Grandpa, and Husband in the Fight of His Life

Hi, my name is Soshanna, and I’m raising funds for my dad, Richard — or Rick, as many know him. Though he’s technically my stepdad, he’s been my dad in every way that matters since I was 8 years old, loving and supporting me and my siblings as his own. He didn’t just take on the role, he lived it fully, with dedication and a big heart.

He’s been a steady, dependable presence through every chapter of our lives — the kind of dad who shows up, pays attention, and always makes you feel seen. Over the years, he’s built strong, loving relationships with each member of our family. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren affectionately call him “Papa Richard,” and he’s been a meaningful part of their lives, someone they look up to, laugh with, and deeply love.

What Happened

Several months ago, Richard began experiencing ongoing gastrointestinal issues. At first, we hoped it was something simple — age-related or diet-related. We tried lifestyle changes, but nothing helped. After further testing, we received devastating news: he has colorectal cancer, with signs that it may have already spread to his liver and lungs.

As we were preparing to start exploring treatments, he had a hernia that required surgery. That surgery was successful, but shortly afterward, his condition took a sudden turn. He became very ill and was rushed to the hospital. Doctors discovered that his intestines had ruptured, and infection was spreading through his body. He underwent two life-saving surgeries within 48 hours. The situation was critical.

He is still in the hospital today, slowly recovering from these major procedures. Unfortunately, this has delayed his ability to start chemotherapy. Recent scans show the cancer may be progressing. His doctors have given a prognosis of 3 to 6 months without treatment, and potentially more time if he can begin chemo soon.

Why We’re Asking for Help

Richard is unable to work, and the medical bills are building fast. Our family is doing what we can, but the financial strain is real — and growing. We’re asking for support to help cover:

He raised me, understood me, and always made me feel seen. He’s loved my children like his own, and he’s been a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend to so many.
