On April 3rd, my dad, Ricardo Guzman, was rushed to the hospital and diagnosed with end-stage liver failure caused by Alcoholic Cirrhosis. His kidneys were also struggling, and doctors told us he had only two months to live without a liver transplant. His MELD score—a measure of liver disease severity—was 43, even though the scale technically maxes out at 40. That’s how critical his condition was.

By the grace of God and a team of incredible doctors, Ricardo received a liver transplant on April 18th.

We are endlessly grateful he was given this second chance—but it comes with a long, difficult road ahead. My mom has had to stop working to care for him full-time, as he now needs 24/7 support. Recovery includes physical therapy for severe muscle loss, managing over 30 new medications, strict dietary changes, and wound care. His immune system is severely weakened due to anti-rejection medication, so even a simple cold can be dangerous.
