Hello! We are dear friends of Rhi and bring this ask to the community they have generously supported time and time again.
Rhi is a queer and trans Korean-American healthcare worker who since January has been weathering many, many storms. Everything from losing their stable job, moving houses multiple times, and now a totaled car!
In January, Rhi lost their job for their commitment to Palestinian liberation. The impacts of this event are far reaching — not only was their workplace one of the largest in the area, but it was also one of the only places they could work in their specialty.
After losing their job, Rhi made the difficult decision to leave their home to reduce monthly expenses as they searched for new employment. They have been unstably housed since April, and have had difficulty finding work in New Orleans.
All these challenges have led Rhi to seek temporary employment out-of-state. When they got hired for a position, Rhi felt excited to get up there to start doing what they love and making money again.
Then, a Lyft driver blew through a stop sign and totaled their car 2 weeks before they were set to relocate. Lyft has declared their car a “total loss,” meaning they will not fix Rhi’s car. This leaves Rhi without transportation. Since this car was only purchased last year (after their other devastating experience of having a car totaled due to no fault of their own) they still have a significant part of their loan to pay back. They are still responsible for paying off the remaining $10,000 owed.
This accident was not only financially devastating, but also logistically precarious. Their new job requires them to travel between two facilities an hour drive apart, and there are no public transportation options. Rhi is renting a car until they can buy a new one.
So, we’re here to ask our broader communities to support our friend and loved one. Their financial needs are:
- $4,500 to pay off car note (this could possibly be more, depending on Lyft’s assessment of their car’s value)
- $3,000 towards a new car
- $500 towards car rental (a requirement of their new job)
- $2,000 towards back pay on bills and debt accrued while out of work
Thank you for helping our friend find stability. Please donate if you’re able, and share with your communities. Rhi acknowledges that there are so many people that need support right now; please make the decisions to contribute that feel right for you.
Any money donated beyond Rhi’s needs will be redistributed, with transparency.
With love,
Rhi’s friends
