Rheka Wells is deeply loved and well known by her family and community as a rock- a big sister, protector, defender, and hard worker. She’s been an employee of EBMUD for several years but was recently placed on leave. For the past year, she has been caring for her two children ages 3 and 5, sharing the daily responsibility of caring for her grandmother who is living with dementia, auntie who is severely disabled with cerebral palsy, with her sister Rheema (Emy) Calloway of the Vegan Hood Chefs. On July 27th, Rheka was involved in a hit and run accident while riding her motor scooter at the intersection of Junipero Serra and Winston. She was knocked unconscious and left in the intersection with a severe head injury. As a result of this accident, she was rushed into a risky emergency surgery with a 50/50 chance of survival. Thankfully, Rheka pulled through surgery but remains hospitalized in the ICU. The doctors are still unable to determine the long term impact of her head trauma or how long she will remain hospitalized. While this accident has been one of the scariest moments of our lives, we are so grateful that Rheka pulled through and is on a strong road to recovery. Your help will make that road a little smoother for her and her family. The funds raised in this campaign will be used to help off-set Rheka’s medical expenses that are not covered by insurance, provide for her children, and give her time to recover from this experience.
