Help Reunite Our Family with Our Pets

My daughter and I relocated to Costa Rica due to the current political climate in the U.S. and circumstances beyond our control. This transition has been especially difficult for my daughter, who is neurodivergent and has already faced more challenges than any child should. One of the hardest parts of this move is that our beloved dog and two cats are still in the U.S. Our pets have always been a source of comfort and stability for her, helping her manage anxiety and providing emotional support during tough moments.

I am working closely with our veterinary clinic and pet courier services to arrange safe transport so we can be reunited as a family. My current fundraising goal is $18,500. The process is complicated and expensive, and in the spirit of transparency, here is the cost breakdown:

  • USDA veterinary paperwork—including exams, health certificates, multiple vet visits, possible vaccinations, and medication: $1,845.00

  • Local and international transportation services: $6,915.10

  • Boarding costs: $7,363.31

This leaves a remaining $1,376.59 as a cushion for unexpected expenses, transportation from the airport in Costa Rica to our home, and basic supplies once they arrive. Every day apart is painful, but I know how much it will mean to my daughter—and to me—to have our pets with us again.

I was shocked when I first received the quotes, and I know others may feel the same. To help explain the high transportation cost: our dog, Amigo, is a boxer–bulldog mix, a breed known for breathing challenges. Because of this, no U.S. airline will allow him to fly due to the risk involved. Only certain international airlines have specialized, pressurized cargo compartments designed for pets with respiratory issues. This means Amigo must be transported by ground from Portland to California's LAX before he can safely fly to Costa Rica. The ground transport alone is over $2,000. Our quote is only good for 30 days and then we have to get a new quote. Our quote is only valid for 30 days, after which we must request a new one. This worries me because rising fuel prices could increase the cost even further, potentially adding more expenses and delaying our pets’ reunification with us.

Although we miss our pets deeply, we are incredibly grateful to the families caring for them until we can be reunited. My biggest concern right now is Amigo—he hasn’t been acting like himself. After 11 years together, I know when something is wrong, and I believe he’s becoming depressed because he doesn’t understand why we’re apart. It breaks my heart that our family is separated like this.

Your support will help bring our family back together and give my daughter the comfort and companionship she desperately needs during this major transition. Every contribution brings us one step closer, and we are grateful beyond words for your kindness, generosity, and willingness to hear our story.

Thank you for considering helping us.
